Visitors to London don`t just find plenty to do during the day. The nightlife is fabulous too. Whatever you want is easily accessible, whether that is nightclubs, live-music venues, opera, dance, comedy or just a quick pint at the pub. There is one important reason why people visit London, though and that is for a trip to the theatre. London`s West End is home to some of the world`s most famous plays and musicals, as well as some newer offerings from up and coming playwrights. The areas around Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Soho are packed with pubs, bars and night clubs. If you want to go where the Londoners go, head for Camden Town or Islington in North London, or Hoxton and Shoreditch in the East End.
If you prefer culture rather than clubbing, the London theater scene is unrivalled around the rest of Europe. Theatre has always played an important role in London`s life and that is still true today. There has been a permanent theatre in London since 1576 and the number of theatres has increased through the years. The area of the West End famed for its theatres is now known as `Theatreland` and there are around 40 theatres located there, many of them in Drury Lane and Shaftsbury Avenue. Beyond this area, there are other famous theatres, such as the Old Vic and the Royal National Theatre in Southwark and the Barbican in the City.
There is a wide variety of productions on at any given time, with something catering to every taste. Whether it is a comical farce, a drama, a Shakespeare play or a musical, you can be sure to find it. London is famed for having the world`s longest running play, Agatha Christie`s `The Mousetrap`, which is in its sixtieth year and still going strong. Many musicals are also long-running productions, with tickets in high demand. It is not unusual for Hollywood stars to appear in the West End, often for a limited period, so it is worth checking a theatre guide before visiting.
A night out at the theatre is mandatory on a trip to London. It is possible to book well before you arrive to ensure that you can get tickets to the show you really want to see. This is particularly important if the production is on a short run or stars a high-profile celebrity. Having said that, with the number of productions that are on in London, it is always possible to get Boxoffice tickets even on the day of the performance, so do not think you`ve missed your chance if you didn`t book weeks before.
London also hosts many live events and concerts, be it a rock concert at Wembley Arena, a classical performance at The Royal Albert Hall, a pop fest at Earl's Court Exhibition Center or an open air concert in Hyde Park, host to some of the greatest concerts ever held in the capital.
