London Transport

London has one of the best public transport system in the world. London underground and London bus service are the most efficient ways to get around in central London.

London underground, or the tube, cover the central area and suburbs mostly north of the River Thames. There are 11 colour-coded lines, and it is very easy to find ones way from one point in London to another. In rush hours the tube can get very crowded, so tourists should try to avoid using the tube in rush hours. In most cases the tube is by far the quickest way to get around in London. Be aware that the tubes stop running around midnight, but there is a good network of night buses.

London buses are also a very efficient way to get around in London. In central parts of London it may not be as quick as the tube, but the buses have more stops than the tube and is therefore able to bring you closer to your destination. In many places there are special lanes for the buses, enabling the bus to keep on moving even if there is a traffic jam.

London taxis, or the black cab, is a more expensive option to get around in London. The taxis are also allowed to use the bus lanes, which enables them to get quicker to your destination. Usually you tell the driver your destination before you get into the cab. Sometimes the driver says no to your request, but it is very seldom. There are plenty of black cabs available in London and in most situations you get a cab in the streets by waiving. You can see the cab is free when the yellow light on top of the windscreen is turned on.

A travel card for the tube and buses can be purchased at all tube station ticket offices. You have to select a range of zones when you buy it, numbered 1-9. Note that these travel cards cannot be used on any of the Airport Express trains. The travelcard can be bought as a Day Travelcard, a 3 Day Travelcard, a 7 Day Travel Card, or monthly or yearly Travelcard. For information of prices, visit the TFL (transport for London) website. An alternative to buying travel cards is Oyster, a contactless electronic smartcard run by TFL. You can get an Oyster Card from any tube station for a deposit of £3, for visitors the deposit is only £2. You can charge up an Oyster Card with electronic funds. This cash is then deducted according to where you travel. Using an Oyster Card costs less than buying a single paper ticket with cash. You can charge up your Oyster Card with electronic cash at any tube station ticket machine or ticket desk.
