Brighton

Brighton, on the south coast of England, is one of the top seaside resorts in the UK, and attracts more than eight million tourists each year, many of which are from overseas.

Hotels in Brighton

Brighton is a university town with two universities and a  medical school. Brighton is also a popular day-trip destination for Londoners, as well as a major conference center with excellent facilities available. Brighton is located almost exactly south of London at a distance of 76 km (47 mi) from the capital city. Trains to Brighton run from Victoria and London Bridge stations in London, taking about an hour, although a little quicker for the Brighton Express services from Victoria.

Among the landmarks in Brighton are: The Royal Pavilion, a former royal palace built as a home for the Prince Regent (later King George IV). The exterior has an Indian theme, whilst the interior was decorated with Chinese decor. Guided tours are available. Brighton Pier, for long known as the Palace pier, opened in 1899. It features a funfair, restaurants and arcade halls. The West Pier was built in 1866, but has been closed since 1975 awaiting renovation. The pier suffered two fires in 2003, and there are now plans for a new landmark in its place. Sea Life Center is an aquarium with walkthrough underwater tunnel, adjacent to Brighton Pier. Volks Railway, the first public electric railway in the world, opened in 1883 and runs from the Sea Life Center to Black Rock near the Marina. It is the world's oldest operating electric railway. The Lanes are a charming collection of little shops, the tumbled street plan reflects the layout of the original fishing villages of Brighton which was located here. The Lanes are known for their wide selection of antique shops.

The sea-front promenade is lively and beautifully preserved but has a contemporary feel about it. Brighton Beach is pebbly, with plenty of entertainment along the seafront for children and adults alike. The pebbly beach gives way to a flat sandy seabed just below the mid tide line. In the summer Brighton Beach is covered in tourists and Brightonians alike.
